Flaming and bashing are not encourage. I am only writing this to voice out and try to make sense. Click spoiler at your own risk.
Who am i? I am Zend, your normal guy who loves cosplay. Yes, I LOVE COSPLAY. I will not say i am a pro, veteran, senior or any of such. I am just like anyone of the forumer here. Though this is not the main point. I have been around, going to CF since 2003. Fell in love with cosplay. I am just lucky to get to know bout them earlier.
What is the purpose of this thread? It is nothing more than just to voice out what i think our malaysian event and cosplay scene, is going.
Yes, more and more people are getting into cosplay. Yes, the cosplay communitty is getting bigger.
Our biggest yearly event, Comic Fiesta is a great proof of that.
Do you remember your first cosplay? Are you proud of it? whatever your answer is, i'll tell you this, Be proud of it. As it is your first step to the crazy world of cosplay. Yea, sure, we all GOT to start from some where. Hey, even if it is not 100% *without wig or what not*. (some ppl tend to argue that it is not cosplay without the wig, this is a subjective matter, save your flaming, i'll get to my point) without all the details and all, it is still considered your FIRST cosplay.
I remember back in 1999. Where cosplay scene in Malaysia just started. Wearing a wig only or a weird dress is considered cosplay. It is different know as some people who somehow judging other ppl's first time cosplaying, as if its a crime to not be 100%. But don't get me wrong, i am not encouraging people to half-cosplay, just that, it is forgivable for a first time =)
For sure ppl, we all are not perfect. Our first time cosplay is always the worst one. =P It is only up to us from where we go from there.
Why do one starts to cosplay? Different ppl have different reason to start. What seperate the real cosplayers (forgive me as i may using such harsh words here) from the not true cosplayers are, the comebacks. The costumes after that, i mean for sure with the experiences from the previous costume and all, we will only get better.
Sure, people got into cosplay, it's just comes down to the fact if they what to stick to it, or give it up.
I have to admit, i do see some first time good cosplayers and some who need more guidances. But i also see the sad cases that has been happening quite frequent nowadays.
Cosplayers bashing each other over matter of cosphail and modelplay and etc. Yes, i know, maybe they deserve these bashing but think of it on another perspective. i mean, it is sad that malaysia's cosplay standard is nowhere to be shown on the map yet. YES I DO THINK THAT, GOT A PROBLEM, SEE ME FACE TO FACE AND WE'LL TALK ABOUT IT. Anyway back to the matter, our country's cosplay won't go anywhere at all, well it will, but slowly. and i mean REALLY SLOW, if we keep on biting each other's neck and bash each other's cosplay and all.
Call me naive, call me a visionary. But trust me, if we all work together and get along, Malaysia's cosplay will be booming and epically known through out the world. So why not lets just give it a try?
A bit far fletch? Maybe, but heck, i want to see it happen. Being in Malaysia, we have limited resources for materials and all. One only can get so much, but we all know different things, and if we all share our knowledge, work together, then it will be so much easier for all of us, doncha think?
Here's a little word to everyone in the forum. I wanna hentam (bash) everyone. Hate me or love me for it, do whatever you like.
Newbies:
Start simple- Don't straight away jump into a complicated costume, what's the rush? If you love that character so much then take time to learn the prop making skills and learn the character. This will do justice to that character.
People will think it's not your first time cosplaying if you go a bit far fletch, they will bash u and if u're not strong enough, they will, break your passion.
Be humble- I can see some newbies think that they know it all. DON'T be or act so arrogant. The old-timers hates it when newbies do that. Heck, who would like anyone so arrogant? Tone down your ego. If you need guidance, ask for it politely and you will get it. Everyone loves those who are humble. But don't be an ass kisser or a vacumm k? Also when an old-timer is being all nice to you, dont step on their head and take advantage of it. Nothing good will come out from it. And another thing, when old timers are giving advices, heed to it, dont act like u're right coz most of the time, u're not.
Justice- Cosplay is for fun, yes i agree on that. But do keep it in mind that you are potraying another character, so please do justice to that character. Don't kill that character by making 'your' own version of him/her. You're not the only one who loves the character. Think of cosplay as not only for yourself, but also for all the fans of the character and series.
Old-timers (veteran, pro, senior or whatever u wanna be called):
Break the barriers- Don't act all high and mighty, sure we have more experience in cosplaying or events. Mix and minggle with the newbies. You're the one who should innitiate this coz the newbies think highly of you, and are intimidated, hence they are a little scared to approach you. So get your head out of your ass and go say hi.
Sharing is caring- Yeap, share your knowledge, and you might be suprised, some of the newbies do know something that you don't. If you start sharing, they will too. Also share among old timers, i see people are having their own group or gangs, and not mixing around, even among the old timers. Ego too high? hmm.. come on la, set aside the differences and get along.
Advice not bash- I do see old timers who are great at advicing the newbies, i respect that =) but some also bash after the newbies don't listen. Well, just move on instead of bashing, save your energy to help out those who really wants em. Don't waste time and energy bashing or just say bad things about the newbies that can't be save.
Comittee:
Forgive me, but i am seeing that CF is getting too commercialized. The fun of it is not there. It's still there but not like it used to be. I know that CF is growing and it has becoming such an event. but.. i see the helpers and workers and comittee without much passion as it used to be. I even see someone in the comittee go and yelled at the helper? Wow, yelling.. Come on, there's no need to be so serious and harsh. I am saying as i see it. WE NEED TO PUT FUN BACK IN CF!
Myself (hey, even i myself need a wake up call):
I too need to get my head out of my ass too. I may be a hypocrite for saying all these in this thread and yet i myself not doing anything much about it. I do know that, but from now on, i wanna be more active and help out the newbies and old timers alike. FOR THE SAKE OF MALAYSIAN COSPLAY! HOOOORAAAAAAH!!!!! Will be posting my own version of guide to cosplay later on, tutorials and such too.
Last words, We all are here in this community for the same reason, our passion for cosplay, anime, and etc. So we all should just SHARE THE PASSION. Towards a better cosplay world. Let's all just get along =)
yours truly,
Zend.
p/s: i dunno what else to put as the subject =P
And this is a guide made by me based on my own experience on cosplay http://forums.comicfiesta.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4747
